: articipants will: • understand and define grit: guts, resiliency, initiative, and tenacity and how these student characteristics can help students become successful in personal and academic environments. • learn why grit is important. That students need to learn that failure is part of the learning process and life; it’s not the failure but the way we handle failure that will help students learn to persevere within and beyond the classroom. • understand why personal grit and resiliency is not enough and must be taught with an equity lens. Educators must recognize levels of “grit” and meet students at where they are rather than where we expect them to be. Not all students demonstrate grit or resiliency in the same manner or by our own definitions or biases. • learn how to incorporate equitable learning strategies integrated with grit and resiliency education curriculum and instructional programs that are designed to increase student confidence and encourage problem-solving. • be given on-line resources educator resources and strategies to help continue their personal research on problem-solving instruction and the power of teaching students how to grow from academic, personal, social, or physical disappointment • become a role-model who demonstrates equitable grit and resiliency strategies and tactics so that students can see adults navigate personal or academic failure All ESPs encouraged to participate. Course fulfills WA State Paraeducator general certificate clock hours requirement.
